It was given a nickname, "City of Light" when the residents were asked to light up the houses for the astronauts of the space expedition to highlight where they were above earth.
Perth has a Mediterranean climate. It is one of the few regions outside of the Mediterranean that has warm summers and mild winters. There are multiple venues for sports activities, Perth has hosted a number of national and international competitions including the Commonwealth Games of 1962.
The main attractions of the city include several art theaters, historic buildings and monuments. Constructed in 1904, His Majesty's Theatre was the largest in Australia at the time with a seating capacity of 2500.
